FAQ — Keep the Rhythm

What's the game about?

It's a text-based quest through Cuba. As you travel, you experience the local culture and complete tasks that teach you different rhythm patterns. You'll start with simple rhythms and move toward harder ones, building your skills with each challenge. Some lessons also include physical exercises — percussion, dance steps, and more — to help you improve your coordination and your sense of timing.

Why Cuba and its rhythms?

Traditional Cuban music became the foundation for techniques used in jazz, rock, classical, electronic, and pop music. Through collaborations, arrangers, and mixed bands, these rhythms became a permanent part of American and European music. Even today, musicians and producers aren't just borrowing "ethnic flavor" — they're using actual Cuban rhythmic keys to rebuild modern tracks. That's why you can hear that irresistible Cuban sound hiding inside almost any genre.

How many levels are there?

The journey through Cuba spans 6 levels which take you through 94 tasks.

You'll explore different cities and landmarks across Cuba — from Havana to Baracoa — and discover how Cuban rhythms were born and how they became the foundation for other musical genres.

As you move from simple rhythms to more complex ones, your skills will grow step by step.

I don't dance salsa — will this still work for me?

Absolutely. You don't need to know how to dance or play an instrument to get into rhythm. Keep the Rhythm gently eases you into a world of beautiful music and rich rhythmic patterns, breaking down new concepts with simple, easy-to-follow examples.

Every lesson includes in-game practice that requires no prior training.

Salsa is simply the context where Cuban rhythms and local musical traditions shine brightest. You can learn dance steps as you go, or focus only on rhythm and music — your choice.

This game is for everyone: people with dance or music experience, people who want better coordination for sports or everyday life, and anyone simply curious to understand music more deeply, with all its nuance and details.

All you need to start is to be curious.

How much time do I need each day?

Anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, depending on your level.

About the author

The game was created by Andrey Bryukhovskikh.

For over 20 years, he's studied different forms of dance, rhythm, music, and the way they shape humans. He dug deep into the treasury of Cuban dance and rhythm with leading instructors in Russia, then traveled to Cuba twice to test his knowledge with the best teachers on the island.

He built his dance and rhythm training programs after confirming that what he knew matched reality.

Andrey was at the forefront of salsa fusion in Russia, organized some of the country's biggest salsa festivals, and performed in Paris and Budapest. He wrote a training manual built around his own method for understanding rhythm — designed for musicians, vocalists, and dancers — which future professionals now study with great success. He even taught St. Petersburg's jazz music scene how to dance. He's led rhythm and dance workshops in 50 cities across Russia, from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Murmansk.

Reviews

I really loved that the videos and exercises aren't just about counting beats — you get to practice along with actual music right away, which makes it so much easier to understand what you're doing and how it fits into dance. The exercise where you have to use a clicker in game and catch the rhythm? I was completely hooked! It's such a great feeling — your brain switches on and something else inside you does too.
For someone with no musical background, this opened up a whole new dimension — physically and musically. With every step from simple to complex, my inner sense of rhythm shifted. Yes, it really exists, and now I can hear it. There's still work to do on the body and the brain, but it's working.
Thank you so much for how clear and structured everything is! I'd heard of Konnakol before, only in theory, but now I've actually gotten to feel it! It was fascinating to watch my body and brain learn this new coordination — things that felt impossible at first started to feel within reach.
My vocal coach pointed out that I've become more rhythmic and better able to handle more complex pieces.
I'm in Seoul, and today I went to a K-pop store with my daughter, who's a huge fan. Different groups' music was blasting (I barely know any of them 😅). But this time, I could clearly hear the different rhythms — the strong beats, the weak ones, even something happening further back in the mix — and it felt amazing! Before, I only ever heard the singers' voices. I wanted to move and dance. With all these different rhythms playing in my head, I barely even noticed the singing. I was completely floored, like I'd been deaf for years and suddenly put on a hearing aid 😂 even though I don't actually wear one 😂 Andrey, thank you — I'm definitely doing more of this ❤️
